Millions in funding

To cope with the pandemic situation, the federal government set up a large number of funding programmes. The financial resources were used both to combat the COVID-19 disease directly and to mitigate the social damage caused by it.

The BVA supported the responsible ministries in implementing the short-term support programmes in the fields of culture, research and humanitarian aid, among others, and to ensure that the financial aid reached the places where it was needed to overcome the crisis.

The money was used, for example, to support the development of a vaccine, a feasibility study for the development of a corona tracking app and a project to place medical students in the public health service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A funding programme was also set up in the cultural sector to support smaller cinemas in need, in order to preserve as much as possible the diverse range of cinemas in Germany.

Here, the decision on who received so-called grants remained with the respective ministries. The BVA then took over all operational details in the practical implementation of the grant procedure. This included, among other things, the review of financing plans, the issuing of approval notices and the actual distribution of the approved funds. Currently, the BVA is in charge of auditing the proofs of use.
