From training to grant management – the range of products and services provided by the Federal Office of Administration (BVA) is diverse and unique in the federal administration. As the central service agency of the Federal Government, the Federal Office of Administration assumes more than 150 extensive and complex tasks. Furthermore, the BVA is, thanks to its e-government expertise, one of the driving forces for modernization and digital transformation of public administration.

Citizens can benefit directly from the BVA's work. However, the staff performs above all numerous tasks for authorities and institutions, including the Office of the Federal President, the Federal Chancellery, and all Federal Government institutions. There is a focus on tasks in the field of public security and of citizenship law: the BVA operates, among others, the Central Register of Foreigners, is involved in visa procedures on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office with several millions of requests a year, and ensures the proper storage of passenger data on behalf of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

In addition, the BVA is responsible for German schools abroad, organizes the management of grants in areas like sport funding, the promotion of culture, youth and social matters, grants education loans, collects loans under the Federal Law concerning the Promotion of Education (BAföG) and provides training for the intermediate administration service at federal level.

The BVA assumes horizontal tasks for many federal institutions. These tasks include central accounting, travel management, the processing of remuneration and government aid covering medical treatment and care of civil servants, as well as recruitment. Central processing allows to save costs and to use comprehensive technological infrastructure. The area of organizational consultancy for ministries and other authorities, which is in increasing demand, arose out of the BVA’s wide variety of experience in the area of administrative modernization. Another key competence is the development of complex IT procedures.

Since 2017, the BVA has been responsible for the management of art and the coinage of the Federal Republic of Germany. The latter includes designing, commissioning the production and placing on the market of euro circulation coins, commemorative euro coins and collector's coins.

In 1960, the Federal Office of Administration was established as an independent superior federal authority of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, with headquarters in Cologne. The Federal Office of Administration manages an own budget of over 530 million euros
